Vedanta Ltd announced on Friday, 14 August 2026, that it has been declared the successful bidder for the Punnam Manganese Block in the state of Andhra Pradesh, following a letter dated 13 August 2026 from the relevant authorities after fulfilling required statutory compliances. The block spreads over 152 hectares and is currently at the G4 stage of exploration — the initial phase of mineral exploration that focuses on broad-scale geological surveys to identify potential mineral deposits. The acquisition was disclosed through a filing to the Bombay Stock Exchange.
This matters strategically because manganese is a critical input for producing ferro-manganese and silico-manganese alloys, which are essential for imparting strength and toughness to steel. India's steel industry — the world's second largest — is heavily dependent on imported manganese ore. Vedanta stated that the acquisition will contribute to the country's growing manganese requirements by enhancing domestic resource availability and reducing dependence on imports.
The dependency frame is significant: India currently imports a substantial share of its manganese requirements, primarily from Gabon, South Africa and Australia.
