What changed
Indian Railways is actively seeking cheaper green hydrogen suppliers and offering offtake guarantees to reduce the high operating costs of its hydrogen fleet. The first indigenously built hydrogen train, operated on the Jind–Sonipat route since mid-July 2026, has already completed more than 2,500 km of commercial service, giving the railways operational data to support the planned rollout.
Why it matters
The Hydrogen for Heritage programme targets routes where overhead electrification is uneconomical or environmentally sensitive—such as the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, Kalka–Shimla Railway, Nilgiri Mountain Railway, Kangra Valley, and others. Hydrogen fuel-cell trains offer zero tailpipe emissions and avoid the visual and ecological impact of overhead catenary on heritage corridors. At ₹80 crore per train and ₹70 crore per route for ground infrastructure, the full 35-train fleet represents a capital commitment of roughly ₹2,800 crore.
What is proven
The 10-coach Jind–Sonipat trainset, built by the Integral Coach Factory in Chennai with integration by Medha Servo Drives, is one of the longest and most powerful hydrogen trainsets in operation globally. Its 3,200 hp propulsion system and 2,600-passenger capacity exceed typical 2–3-coach hydrogen trains in Germany, China, and Japan. A dedicated green hydrogen production and refuelling facility at Jind, with PESO certification and 24/7 safety monitoring, has been validated through real commercial operations. The train emits only water vapour and has already avoided an estimated 36,444 kg of CO₂ equivalent emissions.
What to watch
The decisive variable is green hydrogen cost. Indian Railways is exploring offtake guarantees to attract lower-cost suppliers, but no firm deals have been announced. Watch for supplier announcements or tenders tied to specific heritage routes, and for the selection of the next corridors after Jind–Sonipat.
