The headline is easy to misread: India starts manufacturing shipping containers. The better question is what industrial ecosystems become possible when India localizes container manufacturing. A shipping container is not just a steel box. It is a standardised unit of global trade infrastructure: the object that lets ports, ships, railheads, inland depots, warehouses, exporters and insurers operate as one system.

The commodity dry container is a hard market. China has scale, integrated suppliers and price discipline. The more durable opportunity is therefore not only to replicate the cheapest standard container.
