What changed
Andhra Pradesh has officially sanctioned an NIELIT Quantum and AI University campus in Amaravati, funded by a MeitY grant of ₹730.7 crore. Academic and skill-development programmes will start from September 2026 at a temporary facility in Acharya Nagarjuna University in Guntur while the permanent 8.5-acre campus is developed.
Why it matters
This is India’s first dedicated university campus for quantum and AI, combining quantum computing and communication, AI and machine learning, semiconductor fabrication, chip design, VLSI, embedded systems and high-performance computing under one institution. It is also designed as a net-zero campus with cleanroom nano-fab and cryogenic labs, reflecting the infrastructure standards that frontier-technology programmes now require.
What is proven
The state government approval, MeitY funding and phased academic launch are all confirmed. The campus targets about 8,250 learners over five years, including nearly 1,650 formal degree candidates and 6,600 certification trainees, signalling an explicit intent to bridge the quantum and semiconductor talent gap. No other Indian state currently has an institution of this scope and focus.
