What changed
Paras Defence & Space Technologies has signed an exclusive intellectual-property licence with Tandem Defense LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of U.S.-based Powerus, to manufacture and commercialise the Guardian interceptor family in India. The agreement gives Paras non-transferable, non-sublicensable rights in return for a licence fee and a share of net profits from Indian sales, with an initial 12-month term renewable by mutual consent.
Why it matters
This places a foreign-origin kinetic counter-drone system directly into India’s defence manufacturing ecosystem at a moment when all three services are actively acquiring layered counter-UAS capabilities. The Indian Army’s February request for information seeks up to 45 Drone Interception Systems and 50 Drone Catcher Systems, while its 12 August GeM tender targets AI-enabled high-speed interceptor UAVs and the Air Force has separately requested indigenous solutions capable of autonomous interception. The Paras agreement therefore arrives inside an active procurement pipeline rather than as an abstract technology transfer.
What is proven
Powerus disclosed the Paras agreement in U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission filings, and both companies have publicly confirmed the arrangement. Guardian-1 and Guardian-2 are described as low-cost, high-speed kinetic interceptors designed to physically destroy hostile drones, with cruise speeds around 100 mph and maximum burst speeds near 211 mph. Paras already markets soft-kill systems through its Paras Anti-Drone Technologies subsidiary; the Guardian licence adds a hard-kill layer and gives the company a multi-tier counter-drone portfolio to offer the military, paramilitary and critical-infrastructure customers.
What to watch
The agreement does not mean Guardian-1 has been selected for induction. Any procurement will still require testing, evaluation and a formal acquisition process. The decisive milestones are Army and Air Force trials of Guardian-1, Paras’s domestic partner appointments, and whether the system clears the Anti-Rogue Drone Technology Committee or equivalent technical evaluation. The longer-term question is whether local manufacture stays assembly-only or moves toward deeper indigenisation of the interceptor’s subsystems.
