India Tests Its First Indigenous Long-Range Attack Drone - Capability Shown, Not Yet Fielded
- IG Defence completed trials at Pokhran of the KAL, reported as India's first indigenous long-range one-way (kamikaze) attack drone, with a strike range put at up to 1,000 km.
- It moves India's long-range loitering-munition effort from requirements and orders (Signals S-049, S-053) toward a demonstrated indigenous system.
- A developer trial is a capability milestone, not a fielded, series-produced weapon; armed-forces qualification and orders are the next test.
- The strategic question is whether propulsion, navigation and guidance are genuinely indigenous rather than assembled around imported subsystems.

The development
In trials reported around 20-21 September 2026, Indian firm IG Defence tested the KAL at the Pokhran range, described in reporting as India's first indigenous long-range one-way (kamikaze) attack drone, with a strike range put at up to 1,000 km. The system is a private-sector development aimed at long-endurance stand-off strike, and follows a series of Indian moves in the loitering-munition space.
Why it matters
Long-range one-way attack drones have been a visible capability gap. India has issued requirements - including a Navy RFI for ship-launched 1,000 km-range loitering munitions (Signal S-049) - and placed orders for one-way attack drones (Signal S-053). A demonstrated indigenous 1,000 km-class system is a different order of signal: capability shown, not only specified or procured.
The dependency and systems frame
The strategic value sits in indigenous propulsion, navigation, guidance and airframe integration for long-range strike - the layers that decide whether India fields a sovereign capability or assembles around imported subsystems. A trial is not series production. The systems test is independent confirmation of range and payload, qualification and ordering by the armed forces, and whether the propulsion and guidance stack is genuinely home-grown rather than reliant on imported engines or seekers.
What to watch
- Independent or official confirmation of the KAL's range, payload and guidance performance.
- Any armed-forces trial, qualification or order following the developer's own test.
- Indigenous content of the propulsion and navigation-guidance stack versus imported subsystems.
