Bhopal-based drone manufacturer IZI has demonstrated its indigenously developed VANA multi-role unmanned aerial vehicle to the Indian Army, reported on 12 August 2026. VANA has a take-off weight under 4.5 kilograms and can be deployed in under 60 seconds; the VANA Pro variant offers flight endurance of up to 120 minutes and an operational range of up to 24 kilometres. Its thermal cameras can detect a person at about 800 metres and a vehicle at roughly 2.4 kilometres, in fog or darkness; the platform operates from -15C to +55C, withstands winds up to 15 metres per second, and adds swarm, acoustic and GPS-denied capabilities. The demonstration positions VANA as a contender for the Army's requirement for 5,000 tethered drone systems, set out in a 2025 Request for Information.
The strategic significance lies in the scale of the Army's requirement. Tethered drones stay connected to a ground power source by cable, enabling far longer persistent observation than free-flying battery platforms - useful for border observation posts, base-perimeter security and critical-infrastructure protection along India's frontiers. A 5,000-unit programme would represent a substantial build-out of persistent, low-cost aerial surveillance sourced from domestic industry.
The dependency frame is clear. India's persistent border-surveillance capability has historically leaned on imported platforms and fixed sensor networks. An indigenous platform such as VANA, manufactured in Madhya Pradesh, offers a cost-effective alternative and keeps the sensor, software and support chain onshore. The Army's positive reception at the demonstration opens technical and operational discussions on fit for the 5,000-unit requirement.
The test to watch is whether VANA enters the Army's formal procurement pipeline for the 5,000-unit tethered-drone programme, and whether IZI's manufacturing capacity can meet a defence-scale order. If adopted, it would mark a meaningful scaling of indigenous persistent-surveillance systems along India's borders and reduce dependence on imported platforms.
