The contracts

On 15 October the Ministry of Defence announced two contracts with a combined value of about Rs 4,106 crore, signed in the presence of A. Anbarasu, Additional Secretary and Director General (Acquisition). The ministry framed both as supporting Aatmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India goals.

  • GSAT-7C: Rs 2,563 crore with NewSpace India Limited (NSIL), Bengaluru, for a communication satellite dedicated to the Indian Air Force, described as indigenously designed, developed and manufactured.
  • Varunastra: Rs 1,543 crore with Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL), Hyderabad, for heavyweight anti-submarine torpedoes developed by the Naval Science and Technological Laboratory (NSTL).

GSAT-7C: a dedicated IAF satellite

GSAT-7C is meant to serve the Air Force exclusively, giving secure and resilient communications, including beyond line of sight, as part of a planned military network with ground hubs and software-defined radios, according to ThePrint. Technical specifications have not been released.

ThePrint reports the satellite is expected to be operational by 2030, without attributing that to a named official. No official launch date has been announced; one source said it could launch within the next two years, but ISRO has not confirmed a schedule. The Defence Acquisition Council gave in-principle approval in November 2021 at Rs 2,236 crore, and the report does not explain the difference from the contract value.

Varunastra: an existing indigenous weapon gets a new order

Varunastra is an established, ship-launched anti-submarine torpedo. The Week lists a length of 7.78 m, a 533.4 mm diameter, speeds of 27 and 40 knots and operating depths of 8 m to 600 m, with acoustic homing and autonomous guidance. These are published design figures, not performance verified in this contract.

None of the reports we read state how many torpedoes are ordered, the delivery timeline or the indigenous-content percentage. That limits how much this contract says about production scale.

The Techadyant view

The package links two different layers: secure beyond-line-of-sight communications for air assets and an undersea weapon for the Navy. Both are signed orders on Indian public-sector producers, which is a step beyond approval or development. They are not yet capability. For GSAT-7C the satellite alone is not the system; ground hubs, terminals, encryption and anti-jamming performance decide whether it works under pressure. For Varunastra the test is reliable production, subsystem depth and sustained replenishment. This is separate from the private military-space build-out in S-108, which concerned industry partnerships rather than a government contract.

What to watch next

Watch for the Varunastra quantity and delivery schedule, GSAT-7C launch planning and ground-segment orders, any disclosure of domestic content, and acceptance trials for both.
