CSIR-National Aerospace Laboratories unveiled three indigenous Micro and Small Gas Turbine Engines in New Delhi on 25 August 2026. The NJ-05 provides 5 kg of thrust, the NJ-50 provides 50 kg and the NJ-100 provides 100 kg. The Ministry of Science & Technology says the engines are intended for applications including tactical unmanned aerial vehicles, drone interceptors and compact missile systems. The technical work includes high-RPM turbomachinery and high-temperature combustion technologies.[1] [2] [3]
Why it matters
Propulsion is a strategic bottleneck in the unmanned-systems supply chain. A domestic engine family can give Indian designers more control over airframe performance, payload, endurance, availability and export permissions, particularly for small systems where imported powerplants can impose disproportionate cost and supply risk. The three thrust classes also create a potential common propulsion base across multiple platform sizes rather than a single one-off demonstrator. CSIR-NAL describes Indian industry and aerospace start-ups as potential scale manufacturers, linking the laboratory milestone to a possible domestic production ecosystem.[1]
The Techadyant View
This is a genuine subsystem-development milestone, not yet an operational capability. The engines have been unveiled and the underlying technologies demonstrated, but the public release does not establish flight qualification, endurance testing, serial production, customer selection or deployment on a named platform. The strategic question is therefore whether CSIR-NAL can transfer the designs into an industrial process with the reliability, thermal performance and maintenance characteristics required by defence users.
What to watch
Watch for a named Indian manufacturer or start-up receiving a production or technology-transfer role. Track ground-test and flight-test results, qualification standards, endurance data and integration with a specific UAV, interceptor or missile programme. The strongest follow-on signal would be a funded order, user evaluation or serial-production decision that moves the engines beyond unveiling and into a repeatable defence supply chain.
