The release quantifies existing commitments, including roughly Rs 69,346 crore across four coal-to-chemicals projects, a 2x800 MW ultra-supercritical expansion at Chandrapura, approximately 550 MW of commissioned solar capacity, and grid-scale battery energy storage initiatives.

Why it matters

India's critical-minerals and advanced-materials strategy has so far relied heavily on auctions, exploration and overseas offtake. A large public-sector mining major formally elevating critical minerals and advanced materials to a named business platform is a structural signal that domestic industrial capacity, not only resource rights, is entering the frame.

The dependency and systems frame

Critical minerals and specialty materials sit upstream of both the energy transition and the semiconductor and defence-electronics stacks. Coal India's entry does not yet equal operating mines, separation plants or magnet and chemical capacity.
