A Hyderabad start-up’s 498 km/h interceptor points to a faster counter-drone layer

Apollyon Dynamics, a Hyderabad-based defence start-up incubated at BITS Pilani’s Hyderabad campus, has developed the Ahuti Mk II as a high-speed electric multirotor interceptor. Deccan Chronicle and Telangana Today report that the aircraft achieved a certified top speed of 498 km/h and was recognised by the India Book of Records for the maximum speed achieved by a multirotor UAV. Unlike a conventional surveillance drone, the platform was rebuilt for the counter-UAS role against hostile drones and loitering munitions. The company says its systems have already been fielded with Indian Army units; that claim remains company-attributed rather than evidence of a formal induction or procurement contract.

Why it matters

Counter-UAS defence is not only a sensor problem. A defender must detect, classify and defeat a small aerial threat before it reaches its target, often while keeping the cost of the interceptor proportionate to the threat. A high-speed kinetic interceptor could shorten the engagement timeline and widen the area defended by a mobile unit. The development also shows how India’s start-up ecosystem is moving beyond general-purpose drones into specialised defence missions shaped by recent conflicts and the spread of inexpensive loitering munitions.

The strategic signal is the emergence of a domestic physical-interception option, not the speed record by itself. The harder questions are endurance, guidance and terminal accuracy, all-weather performance, autonomy, command-and-control integration, identification of friendly aircraft, recoverability and unit economics. A 498 km/h test achievement does not establish operational readiness. The programme becomes more consequential if the start-up can demonstrate repeatable intercept trials, integration with Indian Army counter-UAS networks and a manufacturable cost structure. It should therefore be tracked as an early technology signal rather than an inducted capability.
