◆ Live signal · Critical Manufacturing Dependencies

India's Drone Battery Question Is Really a Cell Question

Signal in brief
  • Indian drone battery packs and BMS are increasingly designed and assembled in India.
  • No Drone Expo 2026 exhibitor showed verified Indian manufacturing of drone-grade cells.
  • Pack localisation is not the same as battery localisation - the cell is the strategic content.
  • Pack makers are the obvious anchor customers for a domestic drone-cell line.

The development

Hyderabad's Ascend Powerpacks exhibited at Drone Expo 2026 with Li-ion, high-voltage and semi-solid-state drone battery packs, in-house battery-management systems and smart chargers, stating that it designs, manufactures and services its packs. At least six other energy and battery exhibitors were present. None of them has verified, public evidence of manufacturing drone-grade cells in India, and Ascend does not disclose where its cells come from.

What the evidence shows

  • Indian pack assembly and BMS design for drones is visible and claimed by the companies involved.
  • Cell origin is undisclosed across the pack makers observed.
  • Techadyant's Atlas already records cells as the imported core of domestically assembled drone packs.

Why it matters

  • Endurance and payload - the performance levers defence buyers care most about - are set by the cell, not the pack.
  • A pack assembled in India from imported cells is a localised enclosure around an imported dependency.
  • Indian pack makers are the natural first customers for any future domestic drone-grade cell line.

What we cannot yet say

  • Whether any of the cell-adjacent Drone Expo exhibitors actually manufactures drone-grade cells in India.
  • Which cell suppliers Indian drone pack makers depend on today.

Source note: surfaced through Techadyant Labs' OSINT pass on Drone Expo & Conference 2026. Company statements are treated as claims, not verified manufacturing.
